West Washington Street Construction Kicking Off Soon

The long-awaited transformation of West Washington Street is finally here. Soon construction begins on the $40 million rehabilitation project stretching from Lynhurst Drive to Holt Road—a 1.5-mile corridor that’s home to a diverse mix of small businesses, community organizations, and residents.

For years, this stretch of road has struggled with crumbling pavement, missing sidewalks, drainage issues, and unsafe crossings. That’s about to change.

The project will deliver:

  • Rebuilt pavement for smoother travel
  • ADA-compliant sidewalks and multi-use paths
  • New traffic signals and upgraded safety features
  • Improved drainage to help prevent flooding
  • A new lane configuration—either three or five lanes, based on traffic flow and neighborhood needs

“This is something our side of town has needed for a long time,” said City-County Councilor Jared Evans. “We’ve worked hard to get this on the map, and now we’re finally seeing the investment our corridor deserves. This is about safety, walkability, and restoring pride in our neighborhoods.”

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works will lead the construction effort. Merchants West will provide regular updates to help keep businesses and neighbors informed and prepared.
